Weekly Piano Lessons

Beginner

Beginner students focus on appropriate technique and building a solid foundational understanding of music that we build upon each week. Each lesson ends with a duo “jam session” where students are encouraged to be creative. I typically start working with beginner students at 7 years old. Students are expected to have a piano or keyboard at home so they can practice between our lessons.

Intermediate

If students have a foundational understanding of music then we begin to work in personal taste to the songs we learn. Additionally we start to explore more complex music theory ideas and experiment with improvisation, lead sheet reading, and songwriting.

Adult Lessons

Beginner/Intermediate

I love working with adult musicians who are looking to be more comfortable reading lead sheets. My short term lessons are for the adult beginner to intermediate player on the guitar, piano, or ukulele. These are individualized 45 - 60 minute lessons either online or in person at my studio working toward your individual goals, on your timeline.

These lessons are Low Pressure. I want to help people revamp their musical practice and improve their skills. I’ll provide you with musical resources to help you learn whatever style you’re most interested in, and we’ll talk about music theory along the way. And your musical taste will be considered with every song we play! Let me know when you’re ready to schedule your first lesson.

My Teaching Style

A lifelong piano student, I love helping people experience creativity at the piano.

Beginner piano lessons with kids are focused on the fundamentals of piano playing, with an emphasis on creating an open and engaging environment to explore how they best connect with the piano. I use the Faber Piano Adventure Series as a guide for instruction, which is a “student-centered approach using analysis, creativity, and expression to develop a 'musical mind and heart'.”

For intermediate students we focus on all those things, plus we begin to incorporate musical taste and style preferences into lessons and the pieces we'll work on. All students learn music theory concepts, and those concepts advance with the student.

In every lesson, my priority is meeting the student where they're at with patience and encouragement. We spend time noticing and understanding musical patterns, dexterity, and musicality, and learn to recognize musical symbols with the ultimate goal being to read music on the Grand Staff.

I like to end most lessons with a ‘jam session’ duet, where students are given freedom to make up their own song on the piano, because I see the value in recognizing that you don’t necessarily need to read music to have fun on the piano!
